APMT wins Monrovia concession Analysis
The Liberian government has chosen APM Terminals as the preferred bidder to operate the port of Monrovia as part of a public tender process. APM Terminals said it will invest approximately US$120m in the West African port over the 25-year term of the concession. APMT will be required to rehabilitate the existing Marginal Wharf, develop container and general cargo operations in the terminal and take on responsibility for Marine Services throughout the port. The port is said to be in urgent need of upgrading to modern standards. APM Terminals CEO, Kim Fejfer said "Our aim is to improve the port infrastructure and create a much stronger economic engine for the national and regional market. Construction on the quay wall will begin immediately. Zebra Enterprise Solutions (ZES) has launched of a new terminal operating system (TOS) designed for facilities that handle up to 120,000teu per year. 'Navis Argo' TOS is intended to offers lower-volume terminals cost-effective access to enterprise-level software, eliminating the competitive disadvantage small operations typically face when compared to their larger counterparts. The system is designed to record and report all operational activities on an intuitive and simple interface, making it easier and more affordable to maintain. It includes features for all core operational planning and control requirements for vessel, yard and gate, integrated with equipment control, EDI management and reporting tools. ZES said 35% of the approximately 1,099 terminals worldwide move less than 120,000teu per year and such facilities generally use in-house TOS as they cannot justify the costs of an enterprise system. Hutchison wins Fos 4XL terminal Analysis
The supervisory board of the port of Marseille Fos authority has approved Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) as operator to develop its future Fos 4XL container terminal. This move confirms the conclusion of a call for proposals process launched in February 2008, when the Port of Marseille Fos issued a tender call for the development of the new Fos 4XL container terminal. The port authority said executive management was convinced by HPH's "Twin Hub" concept. Fos 4XL will be developed by HPH Northern Europe as a 'Twin Hub in the Med' of its Rotterdam facilities, linked to its 'sister terminal' by a comprehensive multimodal network. Forth Ports, the last remaining listed UK ports group, has rebuffed a third takeover bid from a consortium of three of its major shareholders.
