The Mediterranean and Southern Europe’s first semi-automatic container terminal has officially opened for business in the Spanish port of Algeciras

Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTIA) was formally opened by Prince Phillip of Bourbon, and Eun Young Choi, Chairwoman of Hanjin Shipping (pictured). More than 500 people, including representatives from many important shipowners, ports and logistics operators, attended the opening ceremony.

Owned and built by the South Korean group and located at the port on the Strait of Gibraltar, TTIA represents is the largest investment ever made by a South Korean company in Spain.

Construction of the terminal began in January 2009 as a four-year commissioning plan. However, Hanjin has been able to complete project in less than two years and bring forward the scheduled deadline for the operational start-up. The terminal has two quay lines of 550 metres and 650 metres and a 35ha levelled yard area, with eight STS, 32 ASC and 20 SHC cranes.

During May, the CKYH Alliance began regular port calls and, followed by UASC, X-Press, Boluda and Hapag Lloyd.

TTIA said it was “pleasantly surprised” by the high level of demand within its hinterland, due to its high volume of import-export containers. In two months, the terminal has reached 47% total operational status and is expected to be fully operational from October onwards.
