Baltic Stevedoring Company (BSC) is expanding its fleet of container handling equipment at the port of Baltiysk to cope with rising container volumes in the Kaliningrad area.

BSC has ordered six Kalmar E-One2 RTG cranes (pictured) and 10 Kalmar TR618i terminal tractors. Delivery of the terminal tractors and four RTGs is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2010 with the remaining cranes arriving in the second quarter of 2011.

The seven-plus-one wide and one-over-six high RTGs will be capable of handling 40-tonne loads. The cranes will come equipped with Bromma all-electric spreaders and Cargotec’s Smartrail autosteering and container position verification system.

Cargotec said that its latest generation of E-One2 RTGs provide the industry’s lowest lifetime costs, consume considerably less fuel compared to conventional diesel-hydraulic RTGs and minimise their environmental impact.

“Kalmar cranes feature excellent reliability and less maintenance due to the absence of a hydraulic unit,” said Sultan Batov, general director of BSC. "The machines’ easily accessible service points combined with unmatched maintenance intervals also helped us to choose this equipment from Cargotec.”
